Preventing frozen pipes in Indiana winters
Indiana winters can drop fast. When pipes freeze, water expands — and that pressure can crack pipes or fittings, leading to major water damage once everything thaws.
Before a cold snap
- Insulate exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, garages, and along exterior walls.
- Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses; shut off and drain outdoor sillcocks if you have interior shutoffs.
- Seal gaps where cold air enters near plumbing (rim joists, pipe penetrations).
- Know where your main water shutoff is before you need it.
During extreme cold
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warmer room air can reach the pipes.
- Let a thin trickle of water run from faucets served by vulnerable lines — moving water is less likely to freeze.
- Keep the thermostat at a reasonable temperature, even if you’re away overnight.
If a pipe freezes
Shut off the water if you suspect a break. Warm the area gently with a hair dryer or space heater (never an open flame). If you can’t locate the freeze, smell gas, or see cracks/leaks, call a plumber right away.
