When to call a plumber vs. DIY
Some plumbing issues are reasonable DIY projects for a careful homeowner. Others can cause flooding, mold, or unsafe conditions if handled wrong. Use this checklist as a starting point.
Often OK for careful DIY
- Replacing a shower head or aerator
- Clearing a mild sink clog with a plunger (not harsh chemicals)
- Replacing a toilet flapper or fill valve if you’re comfortable shutting off the supply
- Tightening a loose faucet handle (without forcing fittings)
Call a plumber
- Active leaks you can’t stop with the fixture or main shutoff
- No hot water, water heater noises with leaks, or gas odors near a heater
- Sewage backups, recurring clogs, or gurgling across multiple fixtures
- Well, softener, sump pump, or battery-backup issues
- Signs of a hidden leak, like a warm spot on the floor or a water bill that jumped (see slab leak detection & repair)
- Any work involving main water lines, gas, or major fixture relocation
