Tank water heater repair & replacement
No hot water, rusty water, or a puddle under the tank? Essential Plumbing repairs and replaces gas and electric tank water heaters, including Bradford White, Rheem and A.O. Smith, across Hendricks County — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Signs your water heater needs service
- No hot water, or hot water that runs out much faster than it used to.
- Rumbling, popping or crackling sounds from the tank — usually sediment and scale on the bottom.
- Rusty or discolored hot water.
- Water around the base of the tank, or dripping from the relief valve line.
- A gas water heater whose pilot won’t stay lit or burner won’t light.
- Hot water that smells like rotten eggs — common with well water.
- An older tank you’d rather replace on your schedule than in an emergency.
What we do
- Diagnosis and repair — thermostats and heating elements on electric units; gas valves, thermocouples, igniters and burner issues on gas units.
- Temperature & pressure relief valves, drain valves and leaking connections.
- Anode rods, which protect the tank from corrosion and can help with odor problems.
- Flushing to remove sediment, especially important with hard water. See our water heater flush tips.
- Replacement with the right size and type for your household, installed correctly with the venting, connections and safety components it needs.
- Upgrades to tankless when it makes sense — see tankless water heaters.
Brands we work on
We install and service the major tank brands, including Bradford White, Rheem and A.O. Smith. Have a different brand? Call anyway — most tank water heaters share the same basic parts and problems.
Hard water and your water heater
Water in our part of Indiana tends to be hard, and hardness minerals settle in the bottom of a tank as scale and sediment. That build-up makes the heater work harder, makes noise, and can shorten its life. Regular flushing helps — and a water softener helps protect the heater and the rest of your plumbing.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How long does a tank water heater usually last?
Many tank water heaters last roughly 8 to 12 years, but hard water, sediment and how the heater was installed and maintained all make a difference. If yours is getting older and showing signs of trouble, it’s worth talking about replacement before it fails.
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
A failed thermostat, element, igniter or valve is often worth repairing. A tank that is leaking from the tank itself can’t be repaired and needs to be replaced. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in and explain the options.
Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?
That odor is often a reaction between the tank’s anode rod and minerals or bacteria in the water, and it’s especially common with well water. Changing the anode rod or treating the water usually solves it.
How often should I flush my water heater?
In hard-water areas like ours, flushing about once a year is a good habit. If your tank is already rumbling or popping, a flush may help — and it’s a good time to have the heater checked.
Do you work on Bradford White, Rheem and A.O. Smith water heaters?
