Water filtration & treatment for trouble water

Orange stains, a rotten-egg smell, gritty water or a chlorine taste? Essential Plumbing specializes in trouble water. We install and service whole-house filters for iron, sulfur odor, sediment and chlorine/chloramine, plus reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water systems and UV disinfection for wells.

Common water problems we fix

  • Iron: orange or brown stains in sinks, tubs, toilets and laundry; a metallic taste. Very common on wells in our area.
  • Sulfur / rotten-egg odor: usually hydrogen sulfide in well water, or a reaction inside the water heater.
  • Sediment: sand, grit or cloudiness that clogs aerators, valves and appliances.
  • Chlorine and chloramine: the taste and smell of disinfected city water.
  • Hardness: scale and spots — handled with a water softener, often working alongside a filter.
  • Drinking water quality: better-tasting water at the kitchen sink with RO.

Treatment options

Iron and sulfur filters

Whole-house filters designed to remove iron and hydrogen sulfide before the water reaches your fixtures and water heater, protecting your softener and stopping stains and odors at the source.

Sediment filtration

Cartridge or backwashing sediment filters catch sand and grit, protecting valves, fixtures and downstream treatment equipment.

Carbon filtration for chlorine and chloramine

Carbon filtration reduces chlorine taste and odor. Chloramine is harder to remove than chlorine and generally calls for catalytic carbon designed for it — we’ll match the media to your water.

Reverse osmosis (RO)

An under-sink RO system gives you filtered drinking and cooking water from its own faucet. RO reduces a wide range of dissolved solids and works best with softened, sediment-free water feeding it.

UV disinfection

Ultraviolet systems treat water for bacteria and other microorganisms without adding chemicals — a common choice for private wells. UV needs clear water to work well, so it is usually installed after sediment and iron filtration.

Test before you treat

The right system depends on what is actually in your water. We start by checking the basics — like hardness and iron — and look at the symptoms you’re seeing. For bacteria, nitrates or other health-related questions on a private well, we recommend testing through a state-certified laboratory so you have accurate results before choosing treatment.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why does my water smell like rotten eggs?

A rotten-egg smell usually comes from hydrogen sulfide in well water, or from a reaction inside the water heater. If the smell is only on the hot side, the water heater is the likely source; if it’s on both hot and cold, the water itself probably needs treatment.

What causes orange stains in my sinks and toilets?

Orange or reddish-brown staining is almost always iron. It’s very common on private wells in Indiana and is best handled with an iron filter, sometimes combined with a water softener.

Do I need a UV system on my well?

UV is a good option when a well has, or is at risk of, bacterial contamination. We recommend testing through a state-certified laboratory first, and UV should be paired with pre-filtration so the water is clear enough for the light to work.

Can a filter remove chloramine from city water?

Yes, but chloramine is harder to remove than chlorine and generally calls for catalytic carbon designed for it. We size and choose the filter media for your water.

What does a reverse osmosis system do?

An RO system pushes water through a fine membrane to reduce many dissolved solids, giving you better-tasting drinking and cooking water from a dedicated faucet at the kitchen sink.
