Sump pump repair, replacement & battery backup systems

Indiana spring storms and heavy rain put basement sump pumps to work. Essential Plumbing installs and repairs primary sump pumps, battery backup systems, check valves and discharge lines so your basement stays dry — and we’re available 24/7 when a pump quits in the middle of a storm.

Signs your sump pump needs attention

  • The pump runs constantly, or never seems to turn on when the pit fills.
  • Water in the pit isn’t dropping even though the motor is running.
  • Grinding, rattling or humming noises from the pit.
  • A float switch that sticks or hangs up on the side of the basin.
  • A loud bang when the pump shuts off, or water rushing back into the pit.
  • Damp floors, musty smells or water stains around the basement walls.
  • No backup — so a power outage during a storm means no protection.

What we do

  • Primary pump replacement — submersible and pedestal pumps, sized for your pit and how hard it works.
  • Battery backup sump systems that take over automatically when the power goes out or the main pump fails.
  • Check valves — new or replacement valves so pumped water doesn’t drain back into the pit and make the pump cycle again.
  • Discharge lines — repairs, re-routes and freeze-related problems so water is carried away from the foundation.
  • Float switches and alarms — fixing stuck floats and adding high-water alarms so you know before water reaches the floor.
  • Testing and checkups before storm season, so you find a weak pump on a dry day instead of a wet one.

Why a battery backup matters

The heaviest rain often comes with thunderstorms — the same storms that knock out power. A primary sump pump can’t run without electricity, so a battery backup sump pump gives the basement a second line of defense. It also covers you if the main pump’s motor or switch fails. We install backup systems alongside your existing pump and show you how to check the battery and alarm.

Discharge lines in Indiana winters

A discharge line that is crushed, clogged, disconnected or frozen can send water right back toward the foundation — or stop the pump from emptying the pit at all. We look at where your line runs and how it ends, and fix the problems that cause backups and ice blockages.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does a sump pump last?

It depends on how often it runs and the quality of the pump. A pump that runs constantly in a wet basement wears out sooner than one that only runs a few times a year. If yours is old, noisy or rusty, it’s smart to have it checked before storm season.

Do I really need a battery backup sump pump?

If your basement takes on water during storms, a backup is strongly recommended. Power outages often happen during the same storms that fill the pit, and a backup also protects you if the main pump fails.

What does a sump pump check valve do?

The check valve keeps the water you just pumped out from draining back into the pit when the pump shuts off. Without a working check valve the pump has to re-pump the same water, which wears it out faster.

How do I test my sump pump?

Slowly pour a bucket of water into the pit until the float rises. The pump should start, empty the pit and shut off on its own. If it doesn’t start, hums without pumping, or doesn’t shut off, give us a call.

Can you replace a sump pump the same day?

We’re available 24/7 and handle sump emergencies as quickly as we can. Call 317-899-9009 and tell us what’s happening.
