Water softener installation, repair & replacement

Hard water is a fact of life in central Indiana, on city water and private wells alike. Essential Plumbing installs, repairs and replaces water softeners and pairs them with the right filtration when your water has iron, odor or sediment too. We specialize in trouble water.

Signs of hard water — or a softener that isn’t working

  • White scale on faucets, shower doors and fixtures.
  • Spots and film on dishes and glassware.
  • Soap and shampoo that won’t lather; dry skin and dull hair.
  • A softener whose salt level never goes down, or a hard salt bridge crust in the brine tank.
  • The softener doesn’t regenerate, or the control valve shows an error or the wrong time.
  • Water standing in the brine tank, or small resin beads showing up in faucets.
  • Hardness came back after a power outage or a change in your water use.

What we do

  • Check your water first — hardness and iron — so the softener is sized and set up for your water and household, not guessed.
  • New softener installation with a bypass valve, proper drain and brine connections.
  • Repair and reprogramming of control valves, brine lines, injectors and float assemblies.
  • Brine tank service — breaking up salt bridges and cleaning out sludge.
  • Replacing worn-out softeners that can no longer keep up.
  • Pairing with treatment — iron filters, sediment filters, carbon or RO drinking water when one system isn’t enough.

City water or well water

Homes on municipal water still get hard water — the treatment plant disinfects it, but generally doesn’t soften it. Homes on private wells often have hardness plus iron, which stains fixtures orange and can foul a softener that isn’t set up for it. We look at what’s actually in your water and set up the system accordingly.

Why soft water protects your plumbing

Scale doesn’t just spot your dishes; it builds up inside tank water heaters, tankless heat exchangers, faucets and appliances. Softening your water helps all of them work better and last longer.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a water softener if I’m on city water?

Often, yes. Municipal water in central Indiana is treated to make it safe, but it is usually still hard. A softener reduces scale on fixtures, in your water heater and in appliances.

Will a water softener remove iron?

A softener can handle small amounts of dissolved iron, but higher iron levels — common on wells — usually need a dedicated iron filter in front of the softener. We check your water before recommending a setup.

How often should I add salt?

Check the brine tank about once a month and keep it at least partly full. If the salt level never drops, the softener may not be regenerating or a salt bridge may have formed.

Can you repair my existing softener instead of replacing it?

Often we can. Control valves, brine lines, injectors and floats can be serviced or replaced. If the unit is worn out or the wrong size for your water, we’ll explain why replacement makes more sense.

Does softened water work with a reverse osmosis system?

Yes — softened water is a good match for an RO drinking water system, and the softener helps protect the RO membrane.
